NHA Friends behind the Scenes

James (front center), Sanu behind him at Dyclar Internet Services.

Nazareth House Apostolate wants to thank everyone who work tireless behind the scenes to make possible the accomplishment the work that we do. There is one group, in particular, who provide NHA with a service that allows us to keep in constant communication (across an ocean). Through James’ savvy computer know-how, The NHA-Dyclar Branch enables us to bear witness to the daily ups and downs of living in the poverty-stricken nation of Sierra Leone. We see first hand the struggles AND the positives. We learn how and in what way we are most needed.

The Dyclar Internet Services has grown with us and improved. The Computers are fairly up-to-date and the server is pretty consistent.

One of our greatest joys coming out of Dyclar is the wonderful news that Betsy is with child after trying for a very long time. She was worried she could not conceive. Here’s a story with a happy ending! We love you Betsy.
It is the plans of NHA to provide a Internet Baby Shower for her – more details and news on that very soon.
Simithe has recently finished additional schooling. We are so very proud of her and her determination and stamina. We love you, Simithe
Sanu, has long been a helpful friend to NHA, lending us his little red car to perform rice distributions, trips to Kabala, etc. We love you, Sanu.
Our friends at Dyclar are even offering Roo an early education of computer skills.
Betsy and Roo in front of Dyclar

Thank you to our friends at Dyclar, you give us the gift
to bear witness to the needs, the work, and the dreams.

Nazareth House Apostolate loves you all!

Update on James’ sister Jodie

My heart was broken when I saw the pictures of Jodie as James emailed them to me this morning. James, Paul and Hannah took Jodie to the hospital this morning. Pain has centralized more so in one leg than the other, it is severe.I fight tears as I see the pain in her eyes, as Paul and Hannah struggle to get her into the hospital.Once seen by the doctor, she is given antibiotic and ibuprofen and told to go home and see what happens – come back in 3 days.Struggling to return to the car, finally a wheel chair is brought for her.

So many times, I’ve seen this sad sight, someone being helped to the doctor. Mako (James brother) being helped to car to see a doctor.

I’ve even experienced it myself. One thing, I can tell you, that in the midst of that excruciating pain, you are aware of the love and the care of the people around you. I was so touched by (James’ parents) Pa Foday and Mama Fatu – with my vomit bucket in hand, carefully escorting me to the car. You can see their concern on their face. Looking at this picture, I remember thinking I was going to die that day. Never had I felt that kind of pain, not since, not before, not even during childbirth.I know that Jodie (James sister) also is aware of Hannah (Paul’s wife) and Paul (James’ brother) and James (who also helped with Jodie but took a moment to snap a few photos so that we may bear witness to what is going on). I know that Jodie is touched by their love and she is also touched by your prayers and concern.James is telling me and these pictures confirm, the time is now! Our staff is wearing thin, they have conquered overwhelming odds to provide and care for the people of Sierra Leone. It has been a long hard year since our last mission trip. We must return with new medications and new supplies to refresh both our staff and those so desperate around them. This comes at a time when funding is down for the sustenance we send monthly to St. Laurence House to do the work of Nazareth House. It comes at a time when we so desperately need a compound and don’t see it coming to fruition any time soon. It comes at a time when everyone is depending on the economy climate before making moves even to help the poor. Yet for the flights, the on-the-ground needs we must raise $10,000 before September 1!…all the while, continuing the monthly support for the people who depend on us and the school, plus try to raise up money for the compound needed by March 1, 2010.So what do we do? How can we begin to process the thought of accomplishing this task? We rely on God. We rely entirely on God as He expresses Himself through your prayers, compassion and donations. Listen with an open heart.

Daughters of Saints Mary and Martha

The ladies of Grace Church are in the process of forming a chapter of

The Daughters of Saints Mary and Martha

Who are the The Daughters of Saints Mary and Martha?
The Daughters of Saints Mary and Martha is an association of women of all ages and backgrounds living under a common Rule of Life. As communicants in good standing in the Anglican Province of Christ the King, each member affirms the Real Presence of our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, and worships using the 1928 Book of Common Prayer.

In addition to living under a common Rule of Life, the Daughters of Mary & Martha commit themselves to continuing study of the history, worship and doctrine of the Church. They do also take advantage of periodic retreats.

Why Saints Mary and Martha?
Mary and Martha of Bethany were sisters and contemporaries of Jesus, but the Gospel accounts of Saint Luke (10:38) and Saint John (11:31) show that they were quite different from each other.

To us, Mary represents the contemplative, studious, prayerful life, while Martha is dedicated to the service of others. We seek to balance the virtues of these two saints in our own lives. Dedicating ourselves to prayer and service under a common Rule of Life can help us achieve that balance.

Sierra Leone Fashion

In many of the photos that I receive from James, I see Kadijah in the outfits that I have left behind from various visits to Sierra Leone. Everyone at St. Laurence House is extremely thrifty and makes best use of what they have and what is given to them. Kadijah has quite the fashion sense and from time to time, she picks out material and has an outfit made. This is most economical way to buy new clothes. Your outfit is custom made (one of a kind) and it stimulates the local economy. The tailor that she uses is exceptionally talented and has even made a Cassock/Alb for Fr. Seraphim which cost us 1/10th of what the God Shops such as CM Almy charge. The quality is better than anything we can purchase store-bought in America or anywhere.

Here, Kadijah sports a typical African attire,

complete with headdress.

Kadijah (far left) & daughter, Lucy (in dark blue 2nd right to left) joins her sisters Fatima, Zainab & Maseray and their children.
