Post arrives in time for Lenten Mission Trip

Last month, twelve boxes were packed

Liz Holt packing boxes at NHA Headquarters in Louisville, KY

and shipped,

(Eight boxes shown above, four more sent the next day)

full of medical supplies, for distribution during our upcoming Sierra Leone Lenten Mission Trip.
Seven of the boxes

arrived on March 1st in Freetown.

There are still 5 boxes that have not arrived but we are hopeful they will be in Freetown by our arrival.

As usual, sweet little Roo is there to help with the boxes.

Unfortunately, Roo fell earlier this week and

knocked his front teeth out.

They were “baby teeth” which is a good thing, but being only 3 years old, it will be a long time before they are replaced. Still and all, with or without teeth, Roo has the best smile around.

I always try to find little surprises to put in the boxes and Roo doesn’t waste time in finding them. This time I had picked up a Winter Spiderman Hat and glove set. Now, you ask “Why does Subsaharan African Child need Winter hat and gloves?” He doesn’t.

BUT he is such an avid Spiderman Fan that anything with Spidey on it is very special to him.
It’s always good to see things follow plan and I am delighted this many boxes have already made it to their destination. Let’s hope the remaining packages arrive very soon.

Another Death that should have been prevented!

Written by James Mansaray: Freetown, Sierra Leone
February 28, 2010

As I continue to come around more and more, I cannot help but to begin each day being so thankful that I am still alive. Memories of the car accident seems to be fading away with only my work to occupy my brain.

At Kroobay last week, after dropping off the bag of medications and supplies for the nurses,I told them about the car accident, they were all so freaked out. They were concerned for me but it was obvious that they also worried who should have been in my shoes to help them out if I had not made it.

It was a good thing that God enlisted my guardian Angel to keep me safe to do a bit more work and if it be God’s will, He will allow me to stay for more years so that this Nazareth House work of love continues. This work load is heavy, but it must be done.

The most sad event I witnessed, just after walking out of the doors of the hospital in Kabala, was a neighbors son who died after falling at a sporting event and he break something.

No money to get him to the hospital, no proper attention, so the boy died after three days of crying pain. This made me to forget my own trouble.

This is the very reason we need your help, we need to help these families out! They are not lazy, they all work and work hard.

They are so poor that the opportunities to see a doctor or feed themselves just doesn’t happen.

They can’t even afford a decent coffin for burial.

We need help from outside.

We need help from you!

I guess you all must have heard of this Emergency NHA mission trip to Sierra Leone. We are losing our place of residence in Freetown.

God will provide. Many time God places a need in a heart but it is ignored and God’s wishes are not met. Please allow him to work through you. Don’t cast you eyes another way, see what is happening here. See our needs.

I for one just cant wait to see Mama Vicki, Emily and Fr. Seraphim here after surviving this car wreck. Had it been the other way, it would have been a big loss for me not to ever work with you guys and continue what together we have started.

So I am using this new life that I have to ask you all to come help us accomplish this our goal. Mama Vicki tells me that we are a few thousand dollars short on our “on the ground” needs money.

This is what we use to care for the poor while we travel through the country. It is definite we will happen upon people with big needs, it is up to those who have the means to offer help to make it a reality. I know I will hate to shake my empty hands at them and walk away. I hope I am not in that position, I pray I will be able to offer them help. Please do not let our people down.

It is always the same old needs here. Possibly things are even worse. More and more suffer and die needlessly. Nothing is too little, for anything and everything will be used to help save a life.

Love,
James, The Lucky Man.

Its back to work for James!

Last Friday, James went to Kroo Bay to distribute some of the medical items that we have acquired at Nazareth House recently from the Family Health Center of Clark County, Indiana and The Willis Family of Louisville.

The supplies arrived in Freetown recently through the USPS Priority Mail. We are thankful that their delivery was not delayed as it is imperative that we do all we can to support the medical staff at Kroo Bay. They are saving lives, doing remarkable work with VERY limited equipment and medical supplies.

The Nazareth House Apostolate Sierra Leone Lenten Mission 2010 will begin in just a few short weeks.

Except for the need for funding, our preparation process is going very well.
For this mission, Pre-Med Student, Emily Raetz, from Virginia will be joining us. James and others in Sierra Leone are already calling her a doctor, but she is the first to clarify that she is just beginning the process. She is, however, an EMT and has emergency first responder knowledge and will be a huge asset to the work. She and I will spend a few days in the Kroo Bay Clinic giving them a hand.

We also plan to work with the children in Kabala at our NHA School and at Kamasorie Village.

Several boxes (8 in total) full of medical supplies, including boxes of ‘over-the-counter’ medications collected at St. Alban’s Church Parish of Sun City, Arizona (Priest in Charge, The Rev. Ron White, the collection drive headed up by Debbie King) are on their way to Freetown currently. We pray their safe arrival to those in need.

We are excited about the upcoming Lenten Mission. The first thing we plan to do is to “refresh” our staff. We found them exhausted last Fall and James told me he is losing more and more weight each week. They (the whole family) work so very hard for Nazareth House. They go over and beyond to plant our love, our gifts, our compassion in every person they meet so that life blooms.
Stepping out in faith, we hope to find housing for our staff (James and his family). Kabala may be a different living area for Nazareth House Headquarters but it is not a stranger by any means to any of us. It is where James and Kadijah were born and raised. Our school in Kabala is blossoming and a good friend of NHA is the new Chief in office. There is much to accomplish and NHA will be very active this Spring. Please keep all this in your prayers, there are so many avenues in which this particular mission is vitally important.

2 Corinthians 6: 1-10 (The Message)

Companions as we are in this work with you, we beg you, please don’t squander one bit of this marvelous life God has given us. God reminds us,

I heard your call in the nick of time;
The day you needed me, I was there to help.
Well, now is the right time to listen, the day to be helped. Don’t put it off; don’t frustrate God’s work by showing up late, throwing a question mark over everything we’re doing. Our work as God’s servants gets validated—or not—in the details. People are watching us as we stay at our post, alertly, unswervingly . . . in hard times, tough times, bad times; when we’re beaten up, jailed, and mobbed; working hard, working late, working without eating; with pure heart, clear head, steady hand; in gentleness, holiness, and honest love; when we’re telling the truth, and when God’s showing his power; when we’re doing our best setting things right; when we’re praised, and when we’re blamed; slandered, and honored; true to our word, though distrusted; ignored by the world, but recognized by God; terrifically alive, though rumored to be dead; beaten within an inch of our lives, but refusing to die; immersed in tears, yet always filled with deep joy; living on handouts, yet enriching many; having nothing, having it all.
