Special Announcement: Motorbike done done

THANKS to all of our supporters and in particularly, a special family’s donations, Nazareth House Apostolate has raised enough money to FINALLY buy the motorbike for Pa Foday.

He is en-route to Freetown presently to collect the bike.

Sanu checks out the bike

James has already purchased it and it is waiting for Pa Foday at St. Laurence House.

We have tried to raise the money for this bike for many years. It is vitally important to our work in Kabala. Every time we thought we would have the money for the bike, an emergency would come up or something that would intercept the money. However, even in the midst of our urgency to buy the compound, the money has come. Thanks be to God!
Now, our House Visit program at the school will be more effectively brought about. Home visitation provides our NHA School staff with personal knowledge of our students home life and well being. It allows us to assess the needs and help the families in areas in which they need attention. If you don’t know there is a problem, you can’t help to resolve it. This way, we are are aware of our students’ every need. This is one of the things so unique and valuable to NHA – personal ongoing relationships. We don’t just help someone and run to the next “project”. We stay with the person, develop a bond, a relationship and grow together in love and friendship.
The bike will be used for the Home Visits plus much more, as the roads in the Kabala Villages are traveled easier by motorbike than by foot or even car.
Eventually, we must also purchase a 4-wheel drive as hauling 10-12 bags of rice on a motorbike simply will not work. LOL, nor will it provide the supply runs to and from Freetown, but until we can afford the vehicle, this motorbike will assist us greatly in Kabala.

NHA Weekly School Report from Mako

THE MAKO REPORT for this week:

By Jeremiah (Jerry) Mako Mansaray, Kabala, Sierra Leone:

Hello Friends and Supporters,
We, the Teachers and Pupils of Nazareth House School, Kabala want to start by thanking you for all the help and support. It is with great pleasure and happiness that we sent you this week school report.

School re-opened again on the 12th of April after the Easter break. On that very Monday, the turn out at the school was good.As with many schools around Kabala, the first week of the re-opening of school usually witnesses a very low turn out of school children both at the Primary and Secondary level. This is a serious problem for our schools and pupils in Kabala. However, with the NHA school and the introduction of the “Home Visit” the situation in our school is looking much better. Parents now take their children to school themselves which is a very good support for the school.

We start the first day of school with a general cleaning. As health is wealth; we want to keep our children in a clean and healthy environment, cleaning is necessary. The children clean the school compound and re-pack their various classes. We introduce our Scripture theme for the term to them at the assembly ground. This Scripture will guide and direct us for the rest of the term.

The day is then followed with a short but very important staff meeting. Updates of the past term activities are discussed and necessary corrections are made. Then a briefing for the term is tabled. What needs to be done, how it should be done, among others are discuss. This helps us to work as a team and keep the school running properly. Pa.Foday as our Educational Superintendent is always present at such briefing.

With such interaction, updates and briefing we are now fully ready to go back to our teaching.

The week started well .We have no complaints of any major illness of any of our children this week. Although complaints of fever, cold and Malaria keep coming to my office. As usual we refer them to the Government Hospital for treatment. Malaria is among the highest complaints we have for this week.

The reason being is that the mangoes are back in Kabala.

this means the proliferation of mosquitoes.

Some children still have the bed nets that NHA provided but they are becoming ragged and most of our kids we visited sleep with out one. This is serious concern for us out here.

My birth was celebrated in my absence at school,I was told this morning. I have to travel to freetown to see my supervisor,as I am writing my degree dissertation. Thanks to Mama Vicki and Father Hicks for paying the university charges. What a great blessing that was.

I also want to thank all friends and supporters for making my birthday (April 15) a blessed one.

With this I leave you for the week.We are what we are today at NHA Kabala school as a result of your help and support. To you all we say it is great that you give and help us out here. Please, continue the good work for you reward will be great in Heaven.
Much love from us all,
Jerry Mako.

On the road to Kabala

After a few days in Freetown during our recent Lenten Mission in Sierra Leone,

it was time to hit the road.

Loading up the car we rented from Sanu, off we go. Someday, after the compound is paid for, we MUST purchase our own 4-wheel drive vehicle

but for now we are most grateful to Sanu for allowing us the use of his car.
Although the journey is long, bumpy and uncomfortable, it is always one of my favorite times. As we travel on,

we stop and meet up with friends both new and old.

There is a bridge that has become a tradition for us to stop

and walk across.

James and I take this opportunity

to participate in some dueling camera shots.
It is a perfect time to greet the people, especially the children

who always seem to gift us with a smile.

Along the way to Kabala,

the scenery is beautiful.

The hills,

the foliage

all so green!

In the town of Makeni,

we stop to say “hello” to old friends

and enjoy a coke.

After several more miles and a few stops,

we are finally

at One Hut Village.

We see the familiar symbol letting buyers know that Palm Wine is available for sale.

I have to tell you, I’ve tried the palm wine, its not something I will try again. And that’s all I got to say about that.

Noticing the enlarged bellies, Emily and I get ready for some medical exams and “worm treatment”.

Checking the eyes

for signs of jaundice,

feeling the bellies for worms, etc.

its pretty routine.

And at any given time you can see Emily and I with a pack of worm medication in our hands – or mouths

A great number of people over there have worms – its as prevalent as the common cold in America. Looking for more who may need treatment we went inside the mud hut.

Here’s your chance to see the inside

The rooms are cool despite the heat.

Emily checks out the master bedroom.

Once we treated everyone for the internal parasites,

we were presented with an infected toe.

Emily was quick to jump in and begin

to clean the wound.

NHA cannot begin to express

our thankfulness to Emily

for coming on this trip. She was such a help, such a pleasure to have with us.

This work is vitally important and we need your help, too.

There are so many opportunities for NHA to love and give to others

but we must pay off the new compound so that we have a center of operations in which to work, a place to store the supplies, etc.

While we are making payments on the house and property, our obligations to assist the people and run the NHA School continue. Please share your involvement in Nazareth House Apostolate with others, help us to grow so that we can meet the needs placed before us.
It is dear people like those at One Hut that are depending on us.

Day after day they work very hard to provide for their families, only to go to bed hungry. Each morning they wake up, hoping that something in the new day will change their lives and make it better. For now, at least once a month, Nazareth House is giving them a hand through your donations. We thank you for your support, they thank you.
We say good bye for this trip, to the One Hut Village and pile back into Sanu’s little red car

and drive on to Kabala. (Thankfully, because of the continued contributions from our supporters, James and his family have already returned to One Hut Village to bring more rice to them during the Easter Holidays.)
As we travel on, Roo sings and claps to the Willy Nelson song “On the Road Again”. Another 45 more minutes and we’ll be in Kabala.

‘ See you at our next stop….
