Sheaku’s internal parasites making their departure!!!!!

Received this email with photos from Mako tonight:

“Big surprise Mom,Sheaku has started to send out the worms much earlier than we expected.
Just from the Bible school, just look at the pictures. He likes the fanta,so i have to get him one everyday”
Thank God for that.
Mako.”

Note: Before the arrival of the Parasite Medicine, Sheaku was extremely dehydrated and unable to eat. The only thing we could use to get nourishment in him was Orange Fanta. This was something new for him and as Mako says, he now loves it! The worms were eating up all of his nourishment but now with their exiting, we will be able to nourish him with food that will be used to sustain Sheaku rather than the worms.

This Week in Kabala in and around the NHA School

Report from Mako Mansaray, Kabala, Sierra Leone.

Greetings form Kabala and Nazareth House Apostolate Primary School.

As a school, we want to give God the glory for yet another week in the school calendar, and the first week in June.

James with our NHA Teachers of NHA Kabala School.

It was a very busy week for the school as well as for our friends and supporters out there in the States and Freetown. We want to extend our sincere thanks and love to them especially Mama Vicki, Father Seraphim and James

for their tireless effort and support to us, and to all of you out there, including Liz
Holt, for all the prayers and support.

To you all we extend our appreciations for you have been so helpful and prayerful for all of NHA. I know there are many of you out there who have been of great help to the school in Kabala and the entire work of NHA. To you all we say “TENKI” (Krio for Thank you)!

We want to thank you all for supporting the school and making these children to have quality education. Your help and support is a blessing and changing the lives of children out here in Kabala. We can do more if only we can share God’s blessings by giving our support and donations to NHA to provide the basic necessities of life: food, medicine and shelter amongst the most pressing needs of the people in Sierra Leone.

We want to give thanks to God,NHA,and our dear supporters and friends out there who join us in prayers for Sheaku, one of our Kids at NHA School who is seriously sick as a result of WORMS. It has always been a problem for my children out here in Kabala.

Sheaku is 5 years old and in class one. He lives in a Bible School with his family. Sheaku has to walk a mile and half by foot every morning to come to school. His belly is swollen with worms – internal parasites.

Seriously infected with so many worms; it has kept him out of school, but we want to thank the timely intervention of Mama Vicki, as she was restless until NHA could do something. James got the worm’s pills to the Government Bus Station yesterday (even while his wife, Kadijah is so sick at home)

and I had to wait for well over 5 hours in Kabala to get them. Upon the medication’s arrival,l I took it right away for Sheaku in the village of Bible School. He was able to
start the treatment right away. I am keeping a close watch over him to see how he responds to the first set of treatment. There is great hope for him having now received the worm’s pills. Again, without the donations from you guys, NHA could not have purchased the worm pills that we have given him. See the help you are giving?

Please keep James wife, Kadijah in your continued prayers as she recovers from malaria.

We should continue to pray for Mama Fatu, also the wife of Pa. Foday, our mother.

I was busy helping Sheaku when I was called that she is seriously sick.

such a small creature with such painful results

Pa. Foday was in the farm working, so I had to send for him. Still having some medical supply form NHA, he was able to give some to Mammy Fatu. It turned out to be more serious than we expected. She is suffering from both Malaria and Typhoid!

Pa. Foday was able to get some one to treat her. We want you all to join us in prayer for her. Pa Foday needs his wife and all of us children of hers need her as well.

From the NHA School and as one big family such as NHA, we want to thank God for everything, as it is GOOD TO GIVE THANKS IN EVERYTHING! Though times become difficult we must always Glorify God.
As you see all that your donations are doing, please continue to give. Give today as your giving will save lives and help the poorest of the poor.
May His love keep us all.
Mako.

Prayer Request

Nazareth House Apostolate brings many needs to your attention, its all part of life and in a country engulfed in poverty, corruption and illness such as Sierra Leone, the needs are severe.

Today in the Christian Calendar, it is The Feast of Corpus Christi, which is the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. It honors the Eucharist, the actual body and blood of Christ.

As this Feast Day celebrates the body and blood of Christ, we ask your prayers for the healing of the bodies of many suffering in Sierra Leone, but in particular these two.

Kadijah Mansaray, NHA Staff member in Sierra Leone stationed at St. Laurence House in Freetown;
she is also the wife of our director, James Mansaray.

Kadijah & James Mansaray

Kadijah has contracted a rather severe case of malaria. She has received treatment and is beginning to make progress in recovery but far from “out of the woods”.
Malaria can recur worse than before in the middle of what seems to be a recovery. Please keep her in your prayers.

As we think on the Body of Christ today, within that Body please place Kadijah, and a young boy named Sheaku.

Mako with Sheaku (taken yesterday June 2) in Kabala

An excellent student of NHA School Kabala. Sheaku’s body has been invaded with worms.

Sheaku with belly full of worms (June 2, 2010)

His belly is hard and extended. The supply of worm pills that NHA had in Kabala has been exhausted, however, James had a few pills left at St. Laurence House and has sent via bus to Kabala. They should arrive today, barring no interference during their travels. Sheaku must start treatment immediately if he is to survive. He is unable to eat There are no supplements such as pedialite in Kabala. We are giving him Fanta to keep him nourished until the Parasite treatment can be started and there is room in his belly for food again.

I ask your prayers for these situations.

I am remembering (and I am sure it is on your mind, too) another Sheku (spelled differently but a little boy with worms just the same).

(A DIFFERENT) Sheku & Kadijah the day before he passed on.

For the previous Sheku, we had no way or means to obtain worm medication. In this picture the child has been brought to St. Laurence House for help and Kadijah is trying to get nourishment into him, yet, without the treatment, he dropped the body the day after this photo was taken. ….and now another Sheaku with the same situation. We thank God that through the unity within NHA, the working together to help each other, at least this time, we have the medication to try and cure him. We hope that the means continues to be available and obtainable to us. Please Pray.

One Hut Village suffers great loss.

Years ago, on the way to Kabala, James stumbled upon a little village with a single hut for all to live in. The hut was crowded but sheltered the family from the harsh sun and rains. The people were so kind to James and treated him so well. They eagerly offered him of their food, eager to give him the best of hospitality. He immediately fell in love with the family and affectionately named the village “One Hut Village”.
Since that time, NHA has done whatever we can to help out the family.

James regularly brings them rice, medicines, supplies, etc.
A few months ago, Emily and I treated the whole ‘village’ for worms.
Some of the younger children were suffering extensively with bellies full of parasites.

Year after year, month after month, day after day this “One Hut” family struggles to survive.
NHA does what it can to assist them,

but as soon as one need is met, another need appears.

Like many in Sierra Leone, One Hut Village hangs on by a thread. However, in all this turmoil, all this struggle – I have yet to encounter this family without a smile on their face.
Always thankful, always joyful for what little they have. They really are an amazing group of people.
During James’ recent visit to Kabala, he again made his traditional stop at One Hut Village to bring rice and supplies.
His heart was pained by what he saw.
A few days before James’ arrival, a storm had blown the thatched roof off of their only place of shelter.
So here is the family, keeping on, making life happen
despite another important necessity taken away from them.
What you see in these pictures are their only possessions, all that they have.
Nothing else to do, they live out in the open, no roof over their heads.
The Rainy Season is pressing harder and harder upon them.
This comes at a critical time for Nazareth House as we struggle to meet the deadlines to purchase the Compound in Kabala. It is extremely important for us to secure our continuance in Sierra Leone. Daily we deal with people who are used to having things they depend on taken away from them.

Many, many people depend on NHA in Sierra Leone.

It is important for them to know that “we are not going away”, that we are here to stay, seeing them through these times of poverty.

We are here for good or bad and wish to establish a permanent residency in Sierra Leone, centering in Kabala, yet being available for all.
So in the midst of our struggle to raise money for the Compound, land etc comes yet another emergency. These are the constants in Sierra Leone, it seems the country is crisis driven. One step forward, eight steps backwards.
These are hard working people, gentle and kind, working their hands to the bone to simply exist. I am so appalled by those who say, “they are waiting for handouts, they need to work harder”. There are always those who become lazy in a culture but for Sierra Leone, I don’t see that as often as I do in First World Cultures. Men, women and children working with empty bellies all day just to provide themselves and their families with one evening meal.
These “emergencies” are why NHA asks for the monthly, regular donations. We need a dependable budget allowing us to have a reserve for the emergencies that will creep into reality, week after week. We keep pressing to accrue those 1000 supporters giving at least $25 per month. That averages out to about 84 cents a day, not even a full dollar. With a thousand donors giving at least $25 each month we’d be enabled to purchase the NHA Compound in Kabala, the land and property within a few short months. If 50 people would enlist 20 of their friends to join in a monthly donation – we’d be set and ready to do the work so vitally needed. This monthly budget would allow us to do the work already before us and add more and more to aid those left behind, stuck in the cracks. It would allow the expansion of our NHA School which is already overloaded with more and more students requesting entrance weekly. We are at a point of having to turn children away, this is not good. NHA could begin construction of new schools in other villages who have no school structures.

A working budget enables us to prepare for the mission trips, and be ready to handle all of the emergencies that are always popping into play. It would provide for all of this work.

Our annual income remains under $40,000. I continue to be amazed by how much we can do with very little. You need only scroll through this blog to see all that is accomplished. This is a credit to the NHA Team that includes you, me, all of us – working together.

With your support, Nazareth House Apostolate WILL get the Compound and land paid. …AND we’ll expand the school, bring education to more villages, add medical clinics ….AND put that new, sturdier zinc roof on the One Hut dwelling.

The needs have been placed in unavoidable plain sight before us, we have only to accept the responsibility to actively make it all happen.

“Nazareth House Apostolate depends entirely on God
as He expresses Himself
through your prayers,
compassion
and generosity”
