Baimba wants your attention, so do a lot of children in Sierra Leone.
By James B. Mansaray, Freetown, Sierra Leone
As I travel through Sierra Leone to distribute supplies from NHA to those in need, I think of who and what generated the compassion to help Nazareth House Apostolate to do this work.
When I consider the people in the world, I know that for some its just not “their thing”. They have no desire to give or help. Then there are others, without perfect reasoning that will say “it’s not my business”. In the scope of how many people there are in the world, few will say “Lets help”, while a majority will just linger and wait for a start before they give a helping hand. But for Nazareth House to be such a small organisation, we certainly have a whole lot that join hands together as a team and end up making the perfect change for a BIG SMILE on the faces of those in pain around us.
Those who don’t know that there are people suffering in Sierra Leone, they need to be told. If people are thinking that the pain of others is not their business, they have never been hungry and had someone hand them a bowl of rice. If they had been hungry or sick, they would realize the need to be involved. Many of those sitting on the fence need to look at these children, so poor, having nothing in life. Understand the smile that stretches across the face when they are given something (no matter how tiny) to ease their pain. Certainly, your own struggles seem smaller at a time like this.
A stop at Kamano Village few miles from the NHA school, this village hosts many helpless children: boys and girls who haven’t learned their A.B.C.’s, rarely, if ever eat a breakfast or lunch and only when they are super lucky do they get a chance to eat a dinner. None of these children ever watch TV or play with toys that they didn’t make themselves. They have nothing like most of the present day children, no gameboys, ipods, they can’t even comprehend what those things are. More importantly, those things would not excite them. They want simple things, like a meal or not to have worms.
As I make my way through the villages here in the country of the poorest of the poor, its seems that the next child is worse off than the first. When I think I have found a child who is most needy, another one pops up even needier.
Poor Baimba is a typical example, welcoming me in his only clothing he owns, tattered and dusty. The clothes are only dusty on dry days, wet days his shredded attire is soaked and muddy.
He is nothing but the clown of the village and he himself accepted it as it is. My first question to him was, “are you ok?” And his answer was “wotin u tink Cameraman” ? Meaning, “what do you think Photographer?” These are the situations that NHA faces everyday. Seeing a need and meeting it.
Tattered Baimba was the first case and by the time I could blink my eyes, I was greeted with more kids living in the same fate. Half naked, hungry, or sick patiently waiting for a big pot filled with only boiled potatoes or cassava.
What they consume is always lacking the basic food necessities’ that a child should have to grow healthy. Most of the children are left alone to fend for themselves, without a real idea of what moms and dads mean in the life of a child. Babes with no future, left unattended, barefooted, but still carrying the smile and signs of hope in their eyes.
Borbor pains (boys in pain) and Titi strain ( girls in same strenuous state) roaming the streets, roads and check points to make a sale
with whatever little they have to bargain with.
Huge baskets on the heads, or dozens of live birds in one hand,
they barter with all sorts of words to cajole those in automobiles into making a purchase.
The tradition of the youth fending for their parents is a must, a belief we all should detest. A tradition that we should curb in order to make a better life for them. Desolate villages driven with nothing but poverty but in the midst of it I see hope amongst these peace loving people. This is what NHA does, it cares for the people, gives them hope, helps them to become what they had no chance to become.
You could make it happen for more children like Baimba – provide the right education, good health, filled bellies – it doesn’t take much. One donation to NHA will help someone out, regular donations each month will keep it going for more and more. Don’t wait around for more people to be involved, jump in now. The need is here and its not going away on its own… we here in Sierra Leone…we are all waiting for you.

Another shipment arrives in Freetown
Shipped from the States, full of supplies for NHA to help the poor and needy, three more boxes arrived in Freetown.
James makes his way in the hot sun of Freetown to pick up the boxes from the post office.
Once the boxes are in his hands, he hurries to St. Laurence House to unload, sort and distribute the contents. One thing that James can always count on is that Roo will be waiting, anxiously to see what is inside. He knows that Mama Vicki always tucks away a little something for him in each shipment.
In this batch, there are lots of supplies for the area medical clinics, especially Kabala and the clinics in the outlying villages.
Roo is happy to see the items for the hospitals, but you can see on his face that he is hoping to find something specifically for him!
NHA is so thankful for all the medications that have been arriving at our headquarters in the States, helping us to provide the necessary aid to the people of Sierra Leone.
Roo continues to patiently, with smile on his face, wait for his surprise!
More boxes are opened…
and Roo digs and digs…searching for ….
and there it is! A book about Simba the Lion.
Along with all the medical supplies, we also shipped supplies for the Teachers at the Nazareth House Kabala School.
Meanwhile, while Roo & James are opening this shipment in Freetown, another set of boxes is being prepared in the States.
Our NHA”package packers” are cramming each box full of supplies – for medical, educational and nutritional use.
Three boxes arrived in Freetown yesterday and three boxes filled with medications arrived at our NHA Louisville Headquarters yesterday.
re-packed for International shipping …
each item was systematically sealed with a kiss of love for our NHA brothers and sisters in Sierra Leone and …
packed and sent on its way! Thanks everyone, Love is everywhere in NHA! God bless you all!

Mako’s Summer Friday Report
Summer greetings from Kabala.
As always, when there is an information gap from Kabala. My internet connection was lost last week so I was unable to report to you. But as for the work of NHA and life in general in the this district, it means that NHA team is at work, even in our silence.

With the rains and the farming season here things are going slower than usual.
But not withstanding, we do best what we love to do: Praying, Home
checks for NHA School Children, helping and praying for the sick and
needy, Farming and getting prepared for the next school year.

Mako praying the Life of Christ on his Jesus Prayer beads.
Pa.Foday’s little church is not very far from the NHA School and the soon to be NHA Compound.
This little church has a good numbers of Christians, (although our district is shared with our Muslim brothers and sisters – living together in harmony – just as NHA blends all walks of life).
and most of them have their children attending the Nazareth House School.
They are all hoping and waiting to see the entire team and work of NHA
move to Kabala.
move to Kabala.

Nazareth House Apostolate is most needed in Kabala, as the district is one of the least developed in the country.
Nazareth House has and is still doing a very good work out here, but
there is more to do: The Compound, The School, The Church, The
Children, The Sick, The Hungry and so many other things that need
urgent attentions.

The question they keep asking is how soon NHA will join us in Kabala? It is up to you how quickly the move is made.
We trust in God, Prayers and the support of our friends and the financial donations
to make this dream come true. We are so anxious for the Compound to be paid and the construction completed so the NHA can fully be seated in Kabala and doing the work so desperately needed.

Take a look at these children I don’t know how they survived but for God’s
provision for their poor fathers and mothers.

Dirty cloths with no shoes on are part of the system for these children.
People continue to die of curable sickness such as MALARIA and
TYPHOID, leaving the poor mothers to look after the children without the support of a husband.
With all this odds and suffering we can’t wait to see the full
operations of NHA in Kabala. It will change so many lives for the better.

There are plenty of good things you can find in Kabala such as: The
culture of the people, the dancing,
culture of the people, the dancing,
the singing, corps, nice places,

as on a happy day like this these children are happy washing at the
stream.
Kabala in the midst of all its struggles is happy and grateful
for whatever they have even when most have little or no hope for food at home.

We can change the system if only we GIVE. If only we share a little of what we have with those who have nothing.
SO, PLEASE, LET’S START GIVING. Let’s make the NHA Compound a reality and let’s start doing the work of NHA in a bigger way – with more and more love.
I’ll see you next Friday…
With all my love and gratitude,
With all my love and gratitude,
Jerry Mako.

Where is Nazareth House?
While the workers finish placing the tiles
(ours, that is, as soon as we pay for it – $39,000 left to be paid),

It is a growing family made up of people of all walks of life brought together to live in the ordinariness of the present moment for the Glory of God.
I have recently had several emails from those visiting our website that ask “What goes on behind the scene at Nazareth House?”, “Besides the work in Sierra Leone, what does Nazareth House do?, “What do the Nazareth Houses in the USA do?”
These questions made me realize that we all know what Nazareth House Apostolate does in Sierra Leone. We are giving a hand to our brothers and sisters in that country that are in need. We’re supplying Medical Clinics,

So what is going on “behind the scene” in the hiddeness of Nazareth House? I’ll tell you. We are living our lives, ordinary, everyday lives, finding God in each moment.
If you look, you’ll find those of us in Nazareth House in our homes

You’ll find us spending time with their families.

See us at the local Coffee House or in the grocery store.
Augies Coffee & Cafe, Chico CA
We are packing boxes to send to those in need in Sierra Leone.

It takes funding to support the work so we are raising money for NHA. A few weeks ago, Savannah Butler of Maysville, Kentucky decided to have a Nazareth House Apostolate Fund Raiser during the Coffee Hour at St. Johns the Evangelist (ACC).
You will find us smiling

laughing.
You will find us crying.
You’ll find us sharing conversation

You may even catch a glimpse of us at Jonah House blowing bubbles.
Catch us at one of the Nazareth Chapels

We’ll be

and you’ll find us when it is lost.

Nazareth, it is a journey, a journey taken together.
Nazareth House Apostolate wishes to extend its heartfelt condolences to the family of our dear friend Jerrye Purcell.
May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon her. We now have one more cheering us on from above.
