The worms are "under pressure"

In reviewing the pictures James has sent me of the most recent boxes received from the post, I noticed that some of the Internal parasite (worm medication) from a box I thought was “lost” was in it. It contained worm medications for the whole St. Laurence House family and some of the neighbors in the area. Unfortunately, we still have not received the medication we sent for St. Mary’s Orphanage. We are in the process of collecting funds to re-purchase more for the kids at the orphanage and I intend to walk them in..rather than using the post. If you would like to help save a child suffering from worms, the pills cost $3.00 per pill. It takes 6 pills to cure a child from this disease. So $18 cures a child.

In talking with James he confirmed that the medication intended for St. Laurence House treatment had indeed arrived! I am delighted. James said to me “We are all now working to become Worm-Free” ; Then he said “Our worms are now under pressure”. As I laughed at this comment, I remember a time years ago when I was in Freetown. We had taken James and the family to a little Chinese restaurant along Lumley Beach. During the meal, Lucy was devouring tons of hot sauce, even eating it by itself. James, lovingly said to Lucy, “Lucy, your worms are going to be miserable tonight”. Dealing with worms is such a common place to Sierra Leoneans that they begin to talk of them as you would an old friend. Something always with you. Roo has lost a lot of weight and was in desperate need of these pills. We are so thankful that they have now arrived and Roo will have completed his treatment by time you read this.

We have sent several shoes on ahead of the Container being sent by Maria Stianchie of One Love Foundation. The container is expected to set sail in a few weeks and arrive in October to the Freetown Port. I don’t personally know if you have sent shoes to Maria through Nazareth House, but if you did, we thank you. I know Maria has already thanked you for your kindness. She tells me there was close to 3000 shoes that arrived. This is fantastic. I am hoping Fr. Seraphim and I are in town when the container arrives to help with the distribution.

We stuffed these boxes so well, cramming medicine inside shoes, sticking something in every available space of each box. I was amazed to see that 4 small boxes contained all that was on this table.

As our mission date approaches please continue your support. The needs are so great. Please consider giving today.

POST comes through in Freetown

Friday greetings, best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

We still have a few boxes “floating” in the postal limbo world. Boxes that we have shipped priority air from the United States but suddenly find themselves in a holding pattern upon arrival to Lungi, Sierra Leone. Fortunately, Four more of our boxes resurfaced yesterday and James has retrieved them!
When the old man was alive and worked at the post office in Freetown, every box from us came through with no hold ups. Since his death, things have not been as efficient. I am hoping that the postal workers will live up to this man’s integrity and begin to deliver each box speedily as he did. He respected the work of Nazareth House and did not want anything to impede its aid to the people in need.

We will be monitoring and watching this situation closely.
I realize the postal workers in Freetown are rarely paid their wages on time, if at all. I understand this and sympathize with the workers. Because we have received these four boxes, I am sending a box specifically for them with supplies they can use. I do expect that they will continue to do their job with honesty and make sure we get our boxes timely. The contents help those in need, I can’t imagine someone trying to obstruct these acts of care and concern for their countrymen. Yet, it happens. The boxes that St. Laurence House received yesterday contained much needed medical supplies and other items desperately in demand for adequate survival. Roo, who at the moment of this box’s arrival was suffering a high fever can now have some relief with the children’s ibuprofen that came in the box.Thank you for the immediate response to yesterday’s pleas for school fees and funds f0r “on the ground” aid while we are in Sierra Leone during our next mission. A few donations came in via paypal last night, other funds have been pledged. We still have a long way to go to make the goals, but we are moving in the right direction. To make a donation to this worthy cause please visit our updated website at www.nazarethhouseap.org. Everything you need to donate is 0n the right side tool bar. While you are there, please navigate through the website and let us know what you think of its new appearance.
In these boxes, medications and other supplies came through. Also a few of the shoes were sent directly to St. Laurence House for distribution to the poor in the neighborhood. You never know how long a container will take to sail to Salone or what it may encounter once it arrives. There have been occasions when containers have been “held hostage” waiting upon very exaggerated “tips & fees” to be made before granting you access to your container’s contents. Some of the neighbors near St. Laurence House are in desperate need of shoes and we took a chance that the post would get these shoes on their feet quicker. We were very fortunate that this came through as we hoped.
Roo has, once again, been very ill and I am delighted to report that FINALLY, a few packs of worm medications have made it to St. Laurence House without being “kidnapped” along the way.Until this box, every time I mailed medication to treat internal parasites, the box was promptly “lost” once it reached Sierra Leone. I could track the box to Lungi, then it disappeared. I am anxious for Roo to receive this medication as he is losing weight and has been very sick this last week. We realized he had worms several months ago and have been trying to ship worm medication all this time. Praise God, enough to treat him arrived yesterday. Ann Marie and Lucy sorted all the supplies received (what stays and St Laurence House and what is distributed). Once sorted, the distribution items were placed in a large box to be given out to those in need.

Urgent Plea

Dear Friends,

I just got off the phone with James who has been trying everything he knows to get photo jobs, etc. to raise money for school fees for his daughters, Lucy and Ann Marie, and his son, Roo. School starts next week and despite our pleas, the funds have still not come in to Nazareth House to allow them to start this school year. James and Kadijah are extremely worried, given that the girls have come so far in their education. Both excelling as top students in their classes. It would be a travesty to have them sit out because of none payment of school fees.
Unlike the school we built in Kabala, education is NOT free in Freetown. It is extemely expensive but very worth it. Lucy is studying to be an accountant and Ann Marie, a lawyer. Both want to remain in their country and help the people. No brain-drain here. Nazareth House promised them we’d see to their education, however, the donations have not yet come through for this specific purpose. School fees for all 3 children through first half of school year are at $3,000. Ridiculously high, but this is the fight we contend with there. This is why so many are unable to get an education in Sierra Leone. Cost are high because the school must cover the costs of books, teachers salaries, everything. There is no real governmental supplement for the schools, they are on their own. Thus the high cost of education. The Freetown schools, unlike our Nazareth House School do not have Nazareth House supporting them. Nazareth House pays the teachers and buys the supplies for our school, therefore we have been able to keep the parents from paying school fees.
Nazareth House is finding itself in the position that we MUST ask for everyone’s help in fundraising these next month. In addition to these school fees we must raise the money for the mission trip which is fast approaching. We’ve must have money for on the ground needs such as buying bags of rice for families as we meet them traveling through Sierra Leone, assisting those in medical needs, buying the supplies and fixing roofs that are leaking, etc. We have the medications to take (with exception of worm medication) ready to take to Sierra Leone, however, it would be a wasted trip to get there and not be able to actively go about helping those in need. We need your help. After all, as a part of Nazareth House, this is your trip – your work, too. We are in this together.
Please, anything you can give will go towards the doing of a great work. Invite all that you know to join in on this cause. Thank you for your love, support and most of all, your prayers. God bless.
