On our recent trip to Sierra Leone (March 2010) the compound we’ve been praying for was literally “dropped into our lap”. It is the perfect facility for our work and in the perfect location. It is directly across the dirt road from our NHA School. For pictures and words about this facility click on our blog post titled “Timing is Everything” . Having said that it was “dropped in our lap” doesn’t MEAN it was given to us, we must pay for it. The price is $55,000.
Understanding the importance and prudence of owning our own property in which to work out of in Sierra Leone, we have been diligently looking for a place to buy. We’ve been looking in Freetown because it is the Capital City and the port of shipments, etc. However, nothing has ever worked out for us to purchase land or a building. All the while, prices in Freetown continue to skyrocket making it prohibitive for us to consider planting permanent roots in that city. Therefore, we made the decision to move to Kabala and we are now finding that doors that seemed to be shutting in our face in Freetown, are being opened in Kabala. It makes sense since our school is already there and thriving, the medical clinics we serve are there, and the villages we assist – its all there. We will now travel once a month to continue our aid to the people we serve in Freetown while living in Kabala. Prior to this, James has had to make the travel to Kabala to do our work. NHA’s expanding work in Kabala has required him to make these trips more often.
Now that we have found the Compound, the five acres of land behind it which will be used for farming and to eventually erect future structures according to the need has become available for $24,000. The owner of the small one bedroom house behind the school has also offered us that property which includes the land around it for $7,200. Nazareth House is now in the process of raising funds to purchase the Compound House, the land behind it and the small house behind the school. Its not an easy task but the price for all 3 properties are far cheaper than what we could obtain in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The same amount of property with existing similar structures would cost well over $300,000.
When we left Sierra Leone last March, we brought back with us 4 immediate goals.
- A Motorbike for Home Visits of the students of the schools and for general use in Kabala for supplies, needs, etc. $3,700
- The Compound House. $55,000
- The land behind the compound house (5+ acres) $24,000
- The 1-bedroom house with land behind the NHA School $7,200
Upon arriving home, calculating the received donations we had in hand, we were able to purchase the motorbike (see the Motorbike in possession… blog post for details) and we are excited to announce that we’ve fulfilled the first goal.
Our immediate goals remain
- The Compound House. $55,000
- The land behind the compound house (5+ acres) $24,000
- The 1-bedroom house with land behind the NHA School $7,200
For a total of $86,200
It is also imperative that we buy a 4-wheel drive vehicle for distribution of rice, medical supplies, etc into the neighboring villages. The roads in Kabala are not safe to travel in a regular vehicle, they are very treacherous. We estimate this cost to be an additional $25,000. However, our first priorities at this moment must to be the NHA Compound and land.
Our monthly aid assistance (rice & food supplements for families, medical fees for the sick, education fees for those in Freetown & Makeni), the NHA Teacher & Administration Salaries, and the maintenance of our staff and St. Laurence House run right at $2,200 per month. During our fund raising for the Compound and Land, we cannot forget this monthly expenditure, we must continue this every month. Without this the school will be unable to continue, people will go hungry, and some may even die.
We need your help, invite your family, friends and co-workers to be a part of this great work. It is a work, but it is so much more. It is people loving people, it is family that extends beyond borders, beyond religious beliefs, despite an ocean separating us, it forms a bond of unity.
Nazareth House is unique in that although it stems from our Christian belief (the hidden years of Jesus in Nazareth) we do not discriminate or attempt to convert those we serve. This is not to say that if they ask, we won’t share our faith, we will answer their questions. However, we are there to love – not to change cultures, traditions or beliefs by bringing our Western ideals. Our NHA School is for every child, Muslim, Christian or other.
Your tax-deductible donation always makes a huge difference in the lives of so many people. Please consider Nazareth House when you decide on donating to a charity and share the story when you talk to your friends and neighbors. Invite them to be a part of this wonderful team. The donations you give at this time will launch Nazareth House onto new horizons with more opportunities to accommodate the needs of the people we serve.
As a funding goal, we continue our desire to have 1000 units/individuals giving at least $25 per month. This would enable to purchase the NHA Compound in Kabala, the land and property within a few short months. This monthly budget would allow us to do the work already before us and add more and more of those left behind, stuck in the cracks. It would allow the expansion of our NHA School which is already overloaded with more and more students requesting entrance weekly. We are at a point of having to turn children away, this is not good. A working budget enables us to prepare for the mission trips, and be ready to handle emergencies that are always creeping into play. This would provide for it. If you are not a part of the $25 a month club please continue doing so today.
